Offshore Oil and Gas: The Promise of Discovery

PrintPrint

Learn about all aspects of offshore oil and gas exploration and production in this informative video series.

Schlumberger created 12 videos that explain the steps needed to drill for oil and gas in the offshore environment. Each video focuses on a different aspect of oil and gas production, including exploration technologies, how oil and gas is located underground, and the different stages of drilling an offshore well.

Offshore drilling videos
  1. Welcome (2:57): This video provides an overview of the complexity of drilling, a brief history of drilling, and an explanation of how oil and gas forms.
  2. Got Data? (1:10): How do geologists locate oil and gas in underwater rock formations? This video explains how sound waves bounce off rock layers underground, creating seismic data that can be used to build a picture of what's down there.
  3. What’s Inside? (1:32): Where is the best place to drill for oil and gas? Seismic data are processed and any information from existing wells is added to the picture to give a full understanding of the rock layers below the surface and the location of oil and gas.
  4. Rig Up (3:26): Learn about the challenges of drilling offshore, the different types of drilling platforms and rigs, and the technology used to reach oil and gas reservoirs below the sea.
  5. Build It (1:50): The drill string reaches from the platform or ship to the seafloor and below. Building the right combination of drill bit and tools is very important for a successful well.
  6. Drill It (2:36): Drilling is more than digging a hole in the ground. Learn about the tools and techniques that go into successful well drilling. The geologists get their first look at the rock during drilling.
  1. Found It (1:31): Now that oil and gas has been found the drill string is replaced by a completion string, with instruments and tools to analyze the hydrocarbons and select the best way to get extract the oil and gas.
  2. Pop Meets Rock (0:48): What are the techniques used to get the oil and gas flowing? See how new technologies keep the oil and gas flowing out of the rock layers.
  3. The Big Test (0:54): Will oil and gas move on its own, or is special equipment needed to help it flow? What tests help figure this out?
  4. Robots (1:29): More drilling defines the size of the oil and gas field. Once the field size is known, a drilling platform can be set up and production begins.
  5. Now What? (0:50): Engineers and geoscientists use seismic data, well data, and production data to help decide what needs to be done to keep the oil and gas flowing.
  6. Things Made from Hydrocarbons (0:44): Hydrocarbons are the source for more than gasoline. Many products in our homes and offices are made from oil and gas.
